all you need is love

gettting ready for Christmas normally involves shopping, baking, writing letters and cards, and trying to figure out how to visit as many people as possible within a short period of time... and in recent years, my plans have included flights, trains, and buses, and how to recover when blizzards hit and find a way to my family... this year, things are a bit different... i will be ushering in summer, not winter, a few days before the 25th... i will need sunscreen and bugspray, not a scarf and snowboots... and will probably play in the ocean and eat ice cream, not throw snowballs and eat lots of Christmas cookies... ok, there might still be Christmas cookies...

but what about Jesus? i've never thought about what it meant to prepare for Christ's arrival on earth (or the celebration of it, which has already happened)... but i heard a sermon a week or so ago on this concept... and it got me to thinking: how did Mary prepare for this? watching my bosses in the last couple months, who had their first child on halloween night, getting ready for their baby, i wouldn't be surprised if Mary's actions were really much different... getting advice and support from family and friends, making space in the home for the little one, mentally psyching herself up for a natural birth without the wonders of modern medicine... but after the birth, what can you do to prepare a child for the world? stories, scoldings, warnings, encouragements can all guide the youth throught the experiences of the elders, but lessons are usually learned the hard way, as we all know... all Mary could do was love her child... love him as any parent loves their kids, as any person loves another, as anyone who cares about anyone else loves them...

its all Jesus asks of us as well... there's a lot of stuff in the world we can't fix, can't control, and can't prepare for... but we can love one another, and we can love God and our Savior... in preparation for the days to come, and when we see the Messiah once again...

so i wish you a very Merry Christmas, full of love, in all the ways it can manifest itself!

not a barbie girl

i often have moments where i realize how un-girly i am... granted, i have the times where i shriek over really exciting news or the sudden appearance of a poisonous snake, like to sit and watch a movie eating nothing but chocolate, and comment on how hot the waiter is... but in the grand scheme of things:

i fall over in heels.. nope, can't walk in them for the life of me! although i've made it a goal to be able to wear them to a wedding next labor day weekend in the states... 8 months and counting..

i don't really like chick flicks... i like plot. story line. not necessarily a movie that is only going to make a profit because colin firth stars...

i'm not addicted to shopping... can't really stand it, to be honest, most of the time... i've seen girls twitch and go a bit crazy because they haven't spent money on something in the last week.. or 24 hours...

i'm not graceful, or delicate, or "curvy" or anything really feminine most of the time..i'd like to think i can be, but usually, i'm not...

but at the same time, i would love to be someone who is adored by someone else, i appreciate the genuine flattery of friends (and a guy every now and then) and have my moments where i just want someone to take me in his arms and make the rest of the world disappear for a while... a cowboy to sweep me away and ride off into the sunset... i want to encourage, inspire, and love a man who loves God more than me, and loves me more than himself :) and i want to be encouraged and inspired by him as well...

most of all, i want to be a follower of Christ who admits her mistakes more than she does now, dare to try to make the world a better place, and with the grace of God maybe even change something... being a girl has nothing to do with any of that, but i think it might help :)

quarter of a century

the imagination is a strange blessing... it aids in day dreams, nightmares, zoning out in lectures, and molding the past, present, and future...

when i was little, i think i imagined that i would have life figured out... probably married, with a job, because that's how "normal" life looks where i come from... probably be living on a farm, with horses, and i would probably be a vet... my husband would probably look like a lifesize Ken or GI Joe, with a flawless farmer's tan, wear a belt buckle, and we'd go on sunset rides together over our own horizon...

funny how life doesn't always play out the way the imagination would believe... fifteen years ago, ten, or even three years ago, if you had told me i would spend my 25th birthday caring for an Australian magpie, koalas, and sugar gliders near the southern coast of Australia, i probably wouldn't have believed you... if you had told me we could drive cars fueled on doughnut grease, send computer-typed letters around the world in a matter of seconds, and find someone in Nepal who has the same passion as you via a mostly-blank screen named "Google", i wouldn't have believed you... if you had told me that americans would elect a black President, Bolivians would elect an indiginous President, and Pluto would no longer be a planet, i wouldn't have believed you and probably would've asked where Bolivia is :)

but someone's imagination thought all this was possible, and now these things are reality... its funny how one imagination can change the world, personal worlds and the global one...

i wouldn't change my life for anything, but i don't think i could've imagined it either... and i have no idea what will happen in the next 25 years, but i'm looking forward to it

shining

i would like to learn how to clean a fish, weld, sail a boat, make creme brulee, play bassoon, and speak french and german

i have learned how to mend a net, tie a bow knot (although i can't remember the name of it, i think that's what it's called), names to call your mother-in-law in Maori, and to tell children that monkeys can bite in spanish

i would like to improve my spanish skills, piano skills, guitar skills, brain capacity, and level of sensitivity towards other people and their emotions

i would like to be less sarcastic, less dense and thick-skulled, and more out-going, sympathetic, and comfortable addressing my faith

i am thankful for the rain, my family, my friends, good chocolate, good pizza, comfortable pillows, warm showers, and the way butter melts on toast

i will never be able to express my love for the people in my life, the environment, God, and the mysteries that life hold

snapshot

the capacity to love is a magnificent gift...
how do we do that, though?
do we care, listen, prioritize others above ourselves, sacrifice our own interests for others, make decisions based on the reverberations on more than just ourselves? remember birthdays, holidays, special days, apologies, random acts of kindness, random phone calls/emails/letters simply to say hi? offer a hug, minute, prayer, cookie, bandage to make something better?
a simple concept... an overlooked concept...
right now, i feel like i'm overlooking all dimensions of love in my life... and incapable of returning or giving much of it to anyone around me... travelling, living, working, hanging out with the same people, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year (give or take some moments) there is prime opportunity for me to love these four friends of mine... we are staying in the same 20x20 ft room, and there are times i feel miles away from them...
none of this is their fault...
yes i love my friends... but do they know that?
the ones in this room in new zealand, and the ones that are thousands of miles away...
flipping through photos in my mind, i see the faces of the ones whose company i enjoy and love, miss dearly, whose conversation makes me laugh, cry, think, and comfortable... the ones who i talked to for a few minutes, others for years... i wonder when i will see them again, where we will be, and if it will be the same...
i guess i can only hope that they know i love them, for who they are, and for who they are to me... how can i show them that? this is a start i guess...
but if anyone has any suggestions, i'm all ears

twilight zone

the age of weddings, babies, divorces, denial of birthdays, mini-life crises, moving, travel, and financial uncertainty: the mid 20s...
there are days when i feel like the world is my oyster, and others where i think that it is all shriveled up and been tossed over my shoulder like some unlucky, never to be read poetry.. ok, possibly a bad example but i think you get what i´m trying to say...
young to many but old to others... responsible enough to have a credit card but still feel young enough to play on seesaws... old enough to drink but not young enough to drink a lot and enjoy it... can stay out late but usually don´t want to... no wonder we in our twenties are stressed out, we are caught in the middle of opportunity and capability and not really sure where to turn because we know our limits...
not really looking forward to the contradictions of the 30s if this is where its all going :)

the tales of missing tails

it has been awhile, and although i feel like i should comment on a previous comment and i could talk about bolivian politics, were going to the root of one of my passions: animals...
having volunteered in a refuge for animals taken off of the pet market here in Bolivia, i have seen the brilliance and even the appeal of having a monkey or a puma for a pet... they are cute, exotic, and fun, all enjoying playing with humans... and it can be fun, when they are young...
when they are adults, the pumas dont know their actual strength, dont understand how much damage their teeth and claws can do, and it takes a lot of time, patience, and scars to undo that damage... the adults at this reserve work only with their volunteers and never see tourists (and no, i didnt see them either, i was with the monkeys)... and although they will never be released in to the wild, and have to be caged overnight, at least they are not trapped in the homes that broke their legs and filed their teeth and claws in desperate attempts to control these wild captive animals...
the monkeys, some missing tails due to doors or dogs, have some hope of being released, as those that are taken young are grouped together and if luck is present, they form a troup and when they are socially stable and old enough, they are released with as minimal of human contact from volunteers as possible... i worked in the tourist park, where the monkeys that would not be released and were too used to human contact, were present... these monkeys, although playful, curious, and still very much monkeys, allowed people to interact with them, and usually it was safe, and people would say how much they would love to have a monkey.. until it turned on them, cuz the person did something stupid, gave them a warning bite, or even a full bite if it went past warnings, and the people got upset because we let them get bit...
los animales silvestres son silvestres and although i was honored and really enjoyed working with the monkeys, it was depressing at times to know that this troup will always compete with humans for territory, the alpha male will always be upset and hence, unpredictable, and that people will continue to be blind to the needs and natural behaviors of these animals and refuges will have to exist for these animals to have a semi-wild life...

bury my heart

i'm torn...
the last two weeks i have been exposed to different stories, views, and hence, emotions and thoughts on the whole concept of war...
talking with two high school classmates of mine, one who was stationed in iraq, the other, afghanistan, they represent very different results of fighting for one side and destroying the other... one firmly stands behind his country still, happy to fight "them over there, as long as it isn't over here" whereas the other has lost the cause, and cannot go back to organized religion, because it is this which causes one human to kill another...
watching "flags of our fathers" which portrays the repercussions of fighting in battles and watching someone who could be your brother, given a different set of circumstances, die in front of your own eyes, by your own hand... and then returning to a land where those battles are completely foreign but you are displayed as a hero...
walking through the war memorials in washington dc gave me some time to contemplate the reasons why those people are represented, whether by name or battle or nation... they fought to protect, to survive, to prove, to represent, to win, to lead, to follow, who knows? WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Cold War, War on Terrorism... it humbles me, thinking of those who fought so the U.S. is where it is today, but it worries me where we are going...
maybe its my ignorance, innocent, or pure optimism, but i just don't see why we can't see that we have our differences but we can live alongside those differences because more or less, we are all the same... we all bleed, no matter what ground we bleed on...
the thing that truly saddens me, though, is deep down, i know we will continue to add monuments... probably forever...

return of that one girl

sitting back in wyoming hasn't quite hit me yet...
i think i was too busy seeing people, getting paperwork done, little tasks, to be too reminiscent about scotland and edinburgh as a whole... the thought that i have left edinburgh for now hasn't really struck a chord, although it nearly made my sister cry...
i will miss it, it is home to me as much as st paul, north dakota, and my own imagination...
the castle, with all its grandeur, arthur's seat with its means of escape, the cobblestone streets, the lack of a clothes dryer, the smell of gorse in the air in spring, the constant unpredictable rain...
but its the people that make any place worth missing... i'm not going to go there tonight, cuz then i'll actually get emotional, and jet lag is setting in...
but edinburgh was home, and it will be my last permanent home for the next year... now that's a bit scary...
my return to wright has been fun so far... i went for a walk with the dog and saw two people from my graduating class that i hadn't seen in a long long time, good to catch up... unpack and repack, and prepare a presentation for the h.s. biology classes tomorrow... its done... mostly done :) but home? i don't know if wright is home for me... i lived here for less than a year, and it was fun, but it has changed... i suppose that happens with any place, and most people, but what happens when the different directions take them apart?
anyway, i need sleep.. i have school tomorrow :)

dancing with the other flock

yesterday morning i met the president of the scottish division of the church of latter day saints... we talked about white-tail deer in wisconsin and his home in missouri and the lake he built there... random, yes...
earlier in the week, i was stopped by two mormon missionaries on my street... being i was on my way to my weekly bible study, i thought this was somewhat ironic, also ironic in that i met these missionaries here when my parents live in a town that is half mormon (and i had lived there for a year)... given this, i had never talked to anyone properly about what the mormon religion actually consisted of, and how it was different than other branches of christianity...
they believe Jesus is the son of God and the Savior, died and rose again as atonement for the sins of humanity... but after Jesus' apostles were killed, they believe the church fell into a disarray and God's commands and the Christian movement was altered by human interpretation and the people's hearts and the churches were wrong... this was clarified to Joseph Smith in America in the early 1800s and the church of latter day saints was started as the reconstitution of Jesus' teachings...
thus saying that the church i grew up in and the churches i have gone to, may be trying but they aren't getting it...
needless to say, my world was a bit rocked... having that thrown at you is not easy... but it was refreshing -- i realized that often, Christians tell people that everything they have ever known is wrong... what they believe, think, and feel is wrong and not aligned with God's will... a tough thing to take, and having been on "that side" of the fence for a while, it was a kick i probably needed, to have someone challenge what i believe...
so i'm checking it out... i don't believe that the churches and Christian people i have met through church, camp, and other various encounters are wrong in their hearts and motivations... i don't believe that we have it all wrong, that we aren't following the teachings of Christ as best we can... i believe it's hard and i know i fail, but i just can't believe the stance of the LDS church... i don't think i could believe that the church, as its meant to be, has been restored on the earth... i think the reformation, which may not be good enough, is still continuing, and i don't know if any of us has it right... but we can all try...
but i'm checking it out, their teachings, their testimonies... if anything, its challenging me to get back in my faith... deep...

mona lisa smile

you ever wonder how different the world would be if we had thought bubbles appear above our heads, showcasing every thought we had?

i would have to control my thoughts a lot better if this was the case... i try to keep my words relatively neutral, not trying to stir up controversy or tempers, unless of course, i am trying to do just that... say difficult things without being too insulting, using that tact that we do... unless i speak without thinking, which happens all too often, but it would be arrogant to think i'm alone in this vice... but to control my thoughts? i am ashamed of half of the stuff that runs through my brain, and that really shouldn't be the case... the state of my mind must reflect my attitude, my heart, my soul... to be as cynical and bitter as it is at times, i don't know if that's very healthy...

i don't like it, but it's there... i could blame it on all kinds of things with petty excuses, but the truth of the matter is my heart just isn't in the right place... i am a Christian, anyone reading this won't be surprised by that if you know me and know me well enough.. i should be reflecting God's unconditional love, understanding, patience, and all those good virtues... but so often i am judgmental, sarcastic, and angry... for really stupid little reasons...

sunday karl gave a great sermon on John 3... classic, but relevant: God is about relationships, not religion, not rules, not who anyone was or what anyone did or what they didn't do, said, so on and so on... He wants us to be in relationship with him, Father/child, Creator/Created, artist/sculpture (but more interactive)...although i've been mimicking that last one... not really speaking back, listening, just kinda sitting there, hoping to be admired when there really isn't much for the artist to admire...
i'm blessed because it isn't my blemishes He sees...
but i need to be more than a dusty dead stone, however carved, molded, and envisioned... more alive, more active, more interested in getting to know the one who made me, the one who saved me, and the person He wants me to be...
its my own personal challenge for life... help! :D

the rolling stones

two tangents from there... or here...

the rolling stones movie, "shine the light", opened in the uk this weekend, i haven't investigated, maybe it is the global opening weekend, i don't know... looks like a cult movie, one with the fans following, movie and music alike... bound to be interesting, and the soundtrack will undoubtedly be amazing :)

and one doesn't gather moss... advantages to continuous movement in life: things don't grow on you... you roll away and roll over it all and see what bumps and turns in the road you will meet next... but when its all over, at the end of the day, you will be walking up the street with a walking stick, alone and isolated, with no one caring about you except if you fall over...

this was the lecture i got from a regular customer today... happy thoughts over a cup of coffee, definitely...

i know my lifestyle at the moment is very selfish, not secure, and involves a lot of moving... and it will moreso in the very near future... but i'm not running (or rolling) away from anything... i just feel like going, and when it works out, i go... there will probably be a time when i will stop going and allow places to grow on me more than i do at the moment... people already grow on me, i guess it'll just be that time when i find (if i find) a job and stay in it for a while...

then something beautiful may grow, but as for now, i'm rolling...

power of attorney

there is a certain lightness in my soul lately...

with this massive trip pending, there are a lot of details -- paperwork, websites, places for us to stay/work/go, reservations, research, etc etc -- many of which involve financial details... i really dislike dealing with money and how it can corrupt people and how people do corrupt things with it, but it makes things happen, even the little but important things, like food and rent... so its one of those things i can't ignore in life...
but i had become obsessed with it, to be frank...
not usually a characteristic of myself, i tend to ignore the numbers in and out of my account, but with all the attention focused on those numbers, its no wonder it sat at the front of my brain, my concentration, about how not to spend money so i could spend it on our trip... but there are things that need to be paid for, and debts are included in that...
and some debts i would like to think i can just wish away and they will disappear... but life doesn't work like that... so after making it disappear (aka paying ha ha :D ), all of a sudden, tension and a weird stomachache both disappeared as well...
i just needed to let go... and its only a start i think... the financial worries of this trip are the least of my troubles, i think... yes my financial situation will be tested, but so will my emotional, spiritual, and physical well being, my cultural openness, acceptance, and meshing, and the relationships with the people i will be traveling with...
all of these are worth so much more than what money can buy...
i need to trust... if i give it up, God will care for it all, and who could do it better? even if i don't like it or understand it at the time...
i say this like its going to be easy... ha... this is only the beginning...

chicken little

today the ceiling in my bathroom fell down...

yeah.

it'd been cracked for a while... painters/carpenters fixed it about 6 months ago, but obviously didn't really fix it... all the mildew just caused the plaster to crack, crumble, and fall to the floor, right above our toilet and shower/bath...none of us were here to hear it or get injured by it, and from cleaning it up, that was a fairly thick plaster ceiling and would've done some damage had one of us been in there...

it was messy and really funny :)

so it'll be a fun process getting that all fixed, but getting the landlord and insurance people around tomorrow...

that's all... really :)

the bird of humanity

the baha'i faith has come up in conversation lately and i know very little about it all... so i looked it up on wikipedia, the world wide web's guide to everything...
a faith based in solid teachings, where the spiritual unity of humankind is pertinent... there are rules and such, somewhat based in the Shi'a Islam foundations, but a religion of its own... my question for any religion is how does one "reach" God, if possible within those beliefs, or the ultimate goal of those beliefs, if its not God... humans have a soul, therefore can relate to their Creator and it is their duty to acknowledge their Creator through his messengers and conform to their teachings, which include (but not limited to) Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Moses, and Baha'ullah, who founded the religion... through recognition, obedience, service to humanity, regular prayer and spiritual practice will allow for growth towards God in this world, and when the soul passes on to the spiritual world, that growth is a basis of judgment and advancement in the spiritual world, and eternal life is spent on a scale of closeness or distance from God... blurbing straight from wikipedia...
a tall order... makes me think Christianity is too easy... believe in Jesus and be saved... actions will show that faith, but its not what we do, who we are, what we say, just that we believe... with my understanding, i don't believe that we can ever do enough, be obedient enough, serve or even love enough to be considered just enough to be close to God, i firmly believe we need a Savior for that... so for me, Baha'i wouldn't cut it... but i like the ideals, i like how you have to work, how working these things out in ordinary life is stressed... maybe i need to make my faith less theological and more practical in my life... that's not a maybe...

the original phoenix

meeting jesus was the best thing that ever happened to me... in various words, faces, and places, he has shown his love, grace, mercy, peace, and strength in so many ways that although i question and i get confused and i don't like some of the things that i may believe, i love jesus, as much as i don't live that out and deny it at times... the people in my life are such a blessing, the community i have found in the global church are a blessing, and the people who share their lives with me and share their faith with me are so blessed... he is alive... this world would not be as beautiful if he were not...
happy easter!

i will be with you always, to the end of the age. - Jesus

vintage

thursday night involved a long tangent in my bible study about predestination, the philosophy and definition of choice, and what condemnation means... it was fun, but i'm not going there tonight, i don't think...
a random thought i had today at the cinema as i sold two tickets to a couple that were probably in their 80s... she was going deaf and wanted to be sure she could hear the movie, and he was checking for her... looking out for each other... i don't think a lot of people in my generation will have that... the 40+ years of marriage/knowing each other, inside and out, said and unsaid, done and undone, hurt and healing... we jump in and out of relationships to extremes, marriage is a formality, and i fear my generation will grow old lonely... not necessarily alone, but i think most of us will lack that companionship... with the high rate of divorce, people leaving each other, and surface lack of caring about stability in the home life will lead to an interesting retirement for a lot of us... not that i'm trying to condemn those who get divorces, etc etc... some relationships don't work and are better ended than continued just for formalities sake... but rushing in and rushing out may have long term effects that we just can't imagine right now...
although i am far from a relationship at this point in my life, i look forward to the day, if it comes, that i will walk down a beach, hand in hand (maybe) with the guy that knows i don't like tomatoes, love chocolate, must have a pet dog, is slightly scared of growing old, has a dream to visit antarctica, and that i started going deaf at 23 (i think)... being alone doesn't bother me... loneliness does...
makes me also contemplate the idea of having a family... growing old without future generations of my dna to keep me company and keep me young... but that's for another night, my friends...
love. peace. dreams. sleep.

long time no see

so... its been a while..

i've been busy -- which is pathetic but here's a review:

i started working another job at a flower/chocolate shop... great atmosphere, great co-workers, just wouldn't suggest starting working at a flower shop the week before valentines day :)

but had the chance to go up to aviemore to visit jared and zelda for a day, which was great to get up to the highlands again... funny, how a perk to moving to scotland involved the highlands and how i have only been there once in the last year and a half...

and spent the weekend in the lakes district of england with 2 couples from my bible study... was really good, a 8 mile hike or something on sunday, following a pub afternoon on saturday, eating and watching the scotland/england rugby game (and scotland won, who knew?)

other than that, not much else going on in my lil' life... finishing up vaccinations, tickets are bought, and places for volunteering are adding up and filling up space... on may 14th, i am leaving the uk to travel the world and do volunteer/work in conservation/wildlife/ ecotourism/whatever with 4 people from my masters course... i've made some good friends with my travel agent and my travel nurse :) that is the short story, and here is a mini-map of where we will be (just travel from the UK to the US and continue west)... starts May 2008, finishes May 2009... another escape from the real world, to see the real world, and see where this education of mine can actually take me and what we can do to help heal this broken lil' world of ours...

the morning after

i was walking on the mound in the city centre of edinburgh a few months ago, must have been a nice day, cuz i was wearing my macalester rugby sweatshirt... a guy stopped me, with the question, "is that macalester in minnesota?" and the conversation led on to mentioning his friend who went to mac and now works for the mlb here in europe... he asked if i worked at starbucks, and after i denied that, he got on a bus and was off and away...
a while later, while sitting at my gramma's apartment, i remembered this conversation and googled this macalester alum's name and found his contact email and decided after zero rational thought to drop him a line, merely because of the UK/Mac connections... received an email a few days later and was told that a pint would be great and he'd be in town early february... he also told me his friend's name (who disappeared on the bus) and i facebooked him and found him too... i call it networking :)
early february it is, and last night i met up with tom and scott and miscellaneous friends of theirs at a pub after work for an extremely funny, comical, over the top, encouraging, and random night out... got to catch up on some chat about mac coaches and athletic staff, and the random conversations that occur between 7 men and one on-looking female.. :D
tom and i are planning on hosting a mac alumni event sometime in the spring for anyone in edinburgh or the general area i guess.. but it was a fantastic night (and i didn't buy a single drink!) and very good company...
i love random connections.

mead, thunder, and the curiosity of the octopus

i'm currently reading a book on the history of norse mythology and although its a spastic introdution to the norse gods and beliefs and it tries to make really vague corrolations to other cultures and modern issues and the like (which makes it difficult to follow and retain, even for my attention span), it is interesting and makes me think...
scandinavia was the area of europe that resisted christianity for the longest time, and held out until the 6th-7th century (keep in mind, i'm no historian so my dates will be broad)... even during the conversion period, there were a lot of compromises, it seems, to help ease this change along... the recognition of thor, odin, and other norse gods in coins, later-dated literature, prayers and rituals from sailors and leaders, as well as prayers, poetry, and worship of Jesus and the judeo-christian God... there was a mold found at an excavation site that had forms for both odin's hammer and Christ's cross, on the same plate... tradition is a difficult thing to smolder... i can see where thor and odin were retained due to their traditional direct integration of the harvest, the sea, and wisdom, whereas the christian God was now personal, although also creator and ruler over everything... but an interesting contrast... it annoys me when the author of this book continually makes parallels between norse legends and biblical accounts, such as people mourning over the death of their respective gods/Savior, that these coincidences are evidences of the merging of the beliefs... of course their is mourning in both: they were both sacrifices and resulted in death, most mourn when that happens to someone they love... but my lil' rant aside...
it also makes me wonder when religion becomes mythology... it seems that conversion to Christianity is often recorded, insinuating that there was a belief to convert from... it seems very natural for people to belief in something unseen, greater than themselves, controlling the uncontrollable... but there's something about Christianity, and a few other major religions, that have stood the test of time in the last ~2000 years and they haven't become mythology, as much as post-modern thinking would almost prefer... we have science and reason and logic to explain the world: we have microscopic signatures in our DNA that link us to monkeys and fungi, we have explored space beyond our moon, we have history to tell us that human rights should and do exist... but we still don't know what lives in the deepest crevices of the ocean floor, how maned sloths find one another and reproduce, and exactly what drives this thing called love...
tangents... i can't explain it all, i've always been one for questions and i have the tendency to forget the answers, if they are there... but if i've gathered anything from this reading on mythology, it serves as a testament to the human nature of soul-seeking and the exploitation of beliefs to justify inhumanity...
but more on that later...

boulders, bricks, and cracking mortar

you know when things just really aren't going your way.... makes you wonder if you should be going that way at all... it just seems that everything in the last 72 hours has gone wrong, from little things to some big things... and i'm kinda lost on what to do about it all... i wonder if the uncertainty of my plans, which is somewhat discouraging, is supposed to be discouraging and i'm supposed to react as such... but as stubborn as i am, i will keep fighting it all... for now... and have faith that it will get me somewhere, hopefully along some path that seems right...
God took care of thousands in a desert for 40 years, i'm sure He can take care of me in this rainy country for a few more months...

the rise of the tides

my life has been absorbed by paperwork since returning to scotland... in a good way... it breaks up the monotony of going to work 1-9 every day... yeppers, every. day.
so i'm applying for a work visa and a new job... prayers would be good...
but it's good to be back... i loved LOVED catching up with so many people that are so important to me, even though our encounters are few and far between... catching up with people in edinburgh (and making new, random acquaintances) will keep me highly entertained for a while :D
but these are my thoughts from a few nights ago... then i'm back to immigration... but its been awhile since i've reflected on faith, God, and where i'm straggling along in this journey we're all on...

1 corinthians 10 -- the believer's freedom
everything is permissible -- but not beneficial or constructive.
we all have free will, choices, options, we can do anything... but we need to think of others... we are all connected... i'm definitely not an example of thinking of others... i left the country where all my relatives and many of my friends are, far far away from where they can reach me... the degree of selfishness on that choice in my life changes each time i analyze it... i don't like that my choices hurt people... and i don't always know that God is leading me where i'm taking myself... but if i keep my focus on Him, He'll be with me wherever i end up... so i apologize to those i've hurt, to those who feel somewhat abandoned, left behind, unprioritized... my love is still with many across the ocean... but this is where i am now... for now...

the megaphone

sports are great... in the past week, the patriots (nfl) have become only the 4th team in football history to have an undefeated regular season and that game versus the giants was spectacular! the score was close, it came down to the last play, there were big plays and there were solid drives and really, really enjoyable to watch... congrats to the pats for winning and breaking several records... but congrats to the giants for actually playing the game... several commentators were talking about how the giants didn't need to play to win, they are guaranteed a spot in the play-offs, and they could've played their second string and given the pats their place in history... and they showed up and rocked the pats world...
the penguins and sabres played in the first outdoor nhl game in the us in history... the weather couldn't have been better -- snow! and wind and all kinds of the crazy stuff that hockey players grew up playing in... no more climate control (but zamboni's were still on call)... all about the elements and the puck... very fun game to watch (and i hope it was fun to play)...
i enjoyed watching the glitz of professional sports disappear for a short time... football was not about rolling over and letting the top dogs win... hockey was not about the biggest fight... it was about playing the game... good on ya guys...
